Assessment of heating plant modernization in Kazakhstan

A SEVEn employee was a member of the World Bank expert panel for drawing up an independent survey regarding modernization of three heating plants in Kazakhstan (Pavlodar, Petropavlovsk and Ekibastuz) with the total output of approx. 1,000 MWe. The survey was ordered by the IFC, which intends to have a capital interest in TsAEK, the company that owns the heating plants. In principle, the survey agrees with the drafted modernization concept that takes into account gradual replacement of several turbines and boilers by new units, as well as other measures for increasing the existing facilities’ effi ciency with regard to sources and distribution. As a result, the total efficiency of electric power production and heat supply will increase from the existing 34% to 44% by 2020.
