How can you try a range of construction activities without stepping onto a real construction site? Virtual reality offers one way to do just that. At this year’s Researchers’ Night at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, visitors were able to try window installation, reinforcing and concreting a balcony, or assembling a ventilated façade – all through interactive VR lessons.
Researchers’ Night attracted many families with children, and younger visitors were among those most eager to try the VR activities. The interactive format gave them an opportunity to explore the world of construction and experience procedures first-hand that would otherwise be difficult to encounter. Virtual reality was one of a number of practical and experimental activities through which the Faculty of Civil Engineering introduced visitors to modern construction during the evening. The VR lessons are being developed within the DiVirtue project and are primarily intended to support education at secondary vocational schools and universities. Their aim is to connect theory with practice in a clear and engaging way, while allowing students to learn correct working procedures safely.
